If your pet is injured, it could be in pain and likely to be scared and confused. You need to be careful to avoid getting hurt or bitten as stress can make your dog unpredictable. Keep your face away from its mouth. Always have a first aid box handy with bandages, splints, burn cream and scissors. Use a muzzle only if the dog is not vomiting and slowly examine your pet to determine what temporary first aid to administer. If your pet has a bad gash, a temporary bandage can be applied with applied pressure to the wound. If your dog is in a lot of pain and you can not use a splint, a blanket can be used as a make-shift stretcher and the dog can be transported with minimum stress to your vehicle. Make sure your pet is secure and comfortable. Ring your vet to tell him you are on your way and bring all medical records. Canine first responder courses are available in Ireland which can be found at this link caninefirstaid.ie
